Everyday HI’s staff experience the devastating impact of the Syrian crisis across the region. This conflict has caused not only severe physical and mental trauma, but devastated vital infrastructure such as schools and hospitals.

It is estimated that more Syrians are dying as a result of the breakdown of the healthcare system than directly from the fighting. Beyond this, healthcare systems in neighbouring countries, such as Lebanon and Jordan, are being put under intense pressure with increased numbers of those in need.

We are responding to this issue. Not only are we helping to provide physical rehabilitation and psychological support, but we are also working across the region to increase the capacity of local healthcare services.

This means that Syrian refugees can be supported now and into the future.

“One day, I want to walk again.”

Mohammed, 32, is from Syria. He became paraplegic when he was hit by a bullet and shrapnel as fighting raged in his home town.

Now living in Lebanon with his wife and daughter he receives physical rehabilitation sessions from the HI team.

“One day I want to walk again, to return to work and provide for my family.”
Mohammed has already made fantastic progress, regaining a large part of his speech. It is the long term support of HI that will help Mohammed back to work.

Without funders from around the world HI would not be able to deliver the high calibre care and support to victims of the Syrian crisis and fight for victims of explosive weapons everywhere. Some of this work is being achieved thanks to support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
