Like other South American countries, Peru is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters. HI implements a project to improve natural disaster risk management in six Latin American countries by enhancing the protection and resilience of the most vulnerable people, including older people, people with disabilities and single women.
In addition, HI assists Venezuelan refugees living in Bolivia as well as host communities. It improves access to services for these refugees and implements activities such as distributing hygiene and food kits, referring people to protection services, and training humanitarian organisations to include the most vulnerable people in their humanitarian activities.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, HI has continued to help the world’s most vulnerable people. We have adapted our interventions in more than 45 countries.
Although Peru has seen strong economic growth, many people still live in poverty.
Peru is an extremely heterogeneous country, with a highly varied geography and serious socio-economic inequalities. Until recently a low-income country, Peru is now a 'middle-income' country, thanks to strong economic growth over the last decade. However, many people still live in poverty, and there are huge disparities between regions.
Moreover, Peru is a country regularly affected by natural disasters (floods, etc.) due to its geographical location. Located on the Ring of Fire in the basin area of the Pacific Ocean, the country is subject to strong seismic activity and can experience earthquakes, accompanied by volcanic eruptions. The country also experiences floods during the rainy season, and droughts.
HI launched its first project in Peru in 2018 and plans to launch other projects in the country between 2020 and 2024, particularly in the socio-economic and health fields.
